Indonesian Heritage Trust
Affirming efforts for heritage conservation in Indonesia

During the international seminar on heritage conservation held in Bali in July 9-14, 2000, the representatives of heritage conservation organizations from various regions agreed to establish the “Indonesian Network for Heritage Conservation” (JPPI) as a communication forum.

Among various activities JPPI organized the Indonesian Heritage Year 2003-2013

After going through long discussions in Yogya, Jakarta, Kaliurang and Ciloto, JPPI together with NGOs, universities, and relevant government agencies launched the “Indonesian Charter for Heritage Conservation” in December 13, 2003.

The meeting in December 2003 also agreed on the 10 years implementation program. One of the targets of the 10 years work program was to establish a formal working organization for heritage conservation.

The Indonesian Heritage Trust (BPPI) was established on August 17, 2004, on the day of the 59th anniversary of the Indonesian independence.

It was declared by the members of the Indonesian Network for Heritage Conservation, and representatives from NGOs and universities. The declaration was also attended and supported by Mr. I Gde Ardika, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Republic of Indonesia.

Basically BPPI aims at strengthening and assisting heritage conservation, which include Natural Heritage;  Cultural Heritage : tangible and intangible cultural heritage; and Cultural Landscape Heritage as the weave of the two

BPPI’s programs are:

  1. Preparing inputs for policy, programs, and laws on heritage conservation.
  2. Encouraging and assisting community movement for heritage conservation.
  3. Developing funding system for heritage conservation.

As a very young organization the Indonesian Heritage Trust is still struggling for survival and sustainable growth
